FULTONDALE — Fultondale High School is on their way to reviving an old tradition of an annual school play with their production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town.”
The play tells the stories of several people living in a small town in the early 1900s. One of the play’s distinguishing features is the character of the “stage manager,” who serves as a narrator, plays several bit parts and interacts with the audience.
The school performed “Steel Magnolias” last year, but before that theater had been sporadic at FHS. FHS English teacher Sarah Henry, who is directing the play, said the school used to have a tradition of a yearly school play, but that plays didn’t happen some years for various reasons. This is Henry’s third year teaching at the school, and she said she is trying to foster interest in a theater or acting class at the school. Henry said the cast is three times as large for “Our Town” as it was for “Steel Magnolias.”
The performances will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 and 25 at the school. Tickets are $6 each. There will also be a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Feb. 24 before the play begins. The cost is $6 a plate.
